What are Viral Respiratory Illnesses (Upper Respiratory Illness / URI)?
COVID19 and Influenza (FLU) and RSV are contagious viruses that result in a variety of symptoms. It is difficult to tell the difference between infections with these viruses because there is a great deal of overlap among the symptoms (listed below). The symptoms are very variable between individuals and can range from mild to very severe and may result in hospitalization and even death (usually in individuals with higher risk)
How Long Until I Get Symptoms?
- FLU and RSV – A person usually develops symptoms 1-4 days after exposure
- COVID19 – A person usually develops symptoms between day 2-5 but may not develop symptoms until 14 days after infection
When am I Contagious with an Upper Viral Respiratory Illness?
Although variable between the different viruses, people can be contagious about 1-2 days before showing symptoms but usually are most contagious during the time of symptoms.
How are URI Viruses spread?
- Droplets – The most common way COVID-19 / Flu /RSV spreads is through respiratory droplets through talking, coughing, or sneezing
- Closes Personal Contact – Touching or shaking hands with a person who is symptomatic or an asymptomatic carrier
- Surface Contact – This is less likely, but touching surfaces that may be contaminated with the virus

Symptoms of a Viral Respiratory Infection

- COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2): Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, fatigue, and body aches.
- Flu A/B: Commonly causes fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, and fatigue.
- RSV A/B: Often leads to coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, bronchiolitis or pneumonia, especially in infants and the elderly.
